This story is inspired by a very real crane. In May of 1998, my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He fought bravely for a year, trying every clinical trial available, until his doctor gently told him the treatments were no longer working.

During that time, a beautiful crane began visiting the pond outside my parents’ home. It came every single day—quiet, graceful, and somehow comforting. We never knew why it stayed so close, but it seemed to sense when my dad needed it most.

After my dad passed in May of 1999, the crane still came on birthdays, holidays, and sometimes on days when comfort was much needed.

The crane in this book is not just part of a story. It is part of my family’s story and a reminder that love can find its way back to us, even in the most unexpected forms.
